Fearlessly Faithful and Faithfully Fearless

Fearlessly Faithful and Faithfully Fearless

This small town blogger got to study ballet with the American Ballet Theatre in New York City this past summer! I packed my bags and lived the NYC dancer life for three wonderful, tiring, exciting weeks. Weeks I won't soon forget, Weeks I will treasure forever.

And in those weeks of intense living, God pressed a strong theme into my soul- be fearlessly faithful and faithfully fearless.

I went into the intensive with so much fear. I feared making the wrong choice. I feared deciding what I wanted to do with my life. I feared that I would make a fool of myself as a dancer. I feared wasting money. I feared a lot of things.

Oh, but God knew what He was doing.

On the flight to NYC, I started reading Louie Giglio's book, Goliath Must Fall. In the book, he discusses specifically how fear must fall in our lives.

Let's talk about timing here.

"Fear grips us whenever we believe that apart from, or in spite of, our best efforts, something undesirable is going to happen and we can't stop it." (page 54)

Then, to top it off, God did something fun. As I sat reading in Bryant Park, eyeing the Empire State Building every now and then, the book mentioned something very familiar. Louie Giglio started to tell a story, and the story was set in none other than the LaGuardia Airport, where I was just hours ago.

It was as if God waved His arms and said, pay attention to this. I am going to use it in your life.

"We understand that we must hear Jesus and we must see Jesus. We must keep the focus of our hearts on him. That's because hearing Jesus and seeing Jesus and focusing on Jesus builds up our faith, and faith is the antidote to fear. The opposite of fear is not being bold and courageous. The opposite of fear is faith. And faith begins by us saying, 'I have confidence in God that he is bigger than this giant.'" (page 56, emphasis mine)

That's when it began to click. If the opposite of fear is faith, then we are called to be fearless faithful and faithfully fearless.

We are invited to live fearlessly faithful lives. For although faith is the antidote to fear, it takes a little fearlessness to be faithful. It takes guts to trust God. It's not easy to be faithful when the world tells us to fearfully cling to all of our rights and pleasures.

To be fearlessly faithful is to trust God with a scary amount of faith. However, we don't fear trusting God, because we know that He is faithful. His faithfulness invites us to have faith in Him without fear. To be fearlessly faithful is trust that Jesus is worthy of all of our lives: every act of obedience, every heartfelt prayer, and every step along the way. It is courageous faith, but not faith in courage.

We are not only called to be fearlessly faithful; we are also called to be faithfully fearless. We are called to a life that is, for lack of a better word, scary. It is true that God provide for us a shelter from the storm. Sometimes, though, He tells us to go out upon the waters and have faith that He won't let us drown. Sometimes, we have to get a little wet.

We need to use faith in order to do fearless things. If not, fear will crush us before we even step outside. Jesus has given us a great commandment, a wonderful mission. It is about time that we faithfully pursued fearlessness for the sake of the kingdom of God.

The real test of faith for me in NYC came on my first Monday, the placement class, the fearful day that would determine the rest of the program. It was one of the biggest things that I feared, but that morning I began to see what being fearlessly faithful and faithfully fearless truly meant.

I walked into that placement class and actually had fun. Joy filled my heart and replaced competition with compassion and comparison with confidence. Suddenly, I felt free. Faith grew in my heart that day.

And the next day.

And the next day.

Faithfulness isn't a one day decision or a seasonal activity. It is an every day, step-by-step kind of lifestyle. Oh, how I need daily reminders to be faithful.

So this is my reminder for myself and maybe for you, too, dear reader. Will we accept the challenge to live fearlessly faithful and faithfully fearless? Will we be courageous with the amount of faith we place in trustworthy Jesus? Will we live boldly because of our faith in Jesus?

Let's grab faith and one hand and fearlessness in the other and dance on forward. I don't think that we will look back from this kind of life.

Much love,

Princess Hannah

The Cutest Mew in the World

The Cutest Mew in the World

Welcome to my day in Notting Hill, London.

It was absolutely brilliant.

After taking the tube for way too long, my good friend Stephanie and I ventured into the Instagram forest of Notting Hill.

First stop, coffee.

With scones, jam, and clotted cream, of course.

Next stop, the cutest mew in London.

Take that back. The cutest mew in the world.

What's a "mew," you might ask.

In Britain, "mews" were once stables that opened up into a small ally. Now, they are often residential and quite cute.

A perfect spot for a ballet photoshoot, don't you think?

And so, after some backbending labor...

...and many smiles...

...Stephanie and I mastered the fine are of Mew Photography.

But mostly, we had fun...

...enjoyed the beautiful city of London...

...twirled around a bit...

... and kept on exploring.

MUCH THANKS goes to Stephanie and her AMAZING photography skills! She was incredibly diligent on not only capturing the perfect moment but understanding why it was good ballet. She is so passionate for Jesus, dedicated to photography, and inspiring in her life. Please go give her Facebook page a follow to see more of her photography.

What is something beautiful that has captured your eye lately?

Writerly Adventures

Writerly Adventures

I love to write. Y'all know this already, of course, but I now share my writing with a bit more of the world through writing in The Odyssey. The Odyssey is an online newspaper of sorts for colleges around the country. I write once a week for their platform and share my articles on social media. The local article with the most views and shares receives $20, but I don't plan on writing on order to make money. (Not to say I wouldn't enjoy 20 bucks.)

Much debating about this opportunity occurred before I made this decision. My first priority in writing for The Odyssey was that this blog in no way decreases in quality and regularity. And then I wanted to make sure my sanity in no way decreased in quality or quantity. Both important things if you ask me.

Then I went through the interview process. Got in. Wrote my first article! The chance to share my writing to such a broad and extensive audience thrills me! I pray that God uses me to further His kingdom though these articles that I will write.

Even though I can't directly post on Grace in Everything the articles that I post on The Odyssey, I plan on linking Odyssey articles to my posts now and then. If you want to keep updated on all of my articles, follow me on Twitter and I will keep you updated. (On a side note, Twitter slowly makes a place in my social media rhythms. Y'all, sometimes I am funny, and it surprises me every time.)

Here is my first ever article for The Odyssey! I write about how to not let the stress and weariness of the home stretch of the school year wear us down so that we forget about the moments. For "it is when we forget about the moments that we forget to live." This piece constantly challenges me to live what I preach, because choosing to live proves difficult when living gets hard.

My most recent post describes and defines ballet. Ballet claims an important part of my life, but defining it creates a dilemma. Is it a sport? An art? A performing art? I dive deep into the essence of ballet as "the place where the heart meets the body."

Hopefully that you enjoy the articles! Comment below your thoughts on this new adventure I embark upon! Also comment the exciting and non-exciting adventures life is taking you!

Writing for The Odyssey actually increases my excitement to continue to provide innovative and unique posts for Grace in Everything. Thank you for making my life a bit sunnier and more encouraging!

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou My Vision

via Hannah Rose Beasley
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my Wisdom, and thou my true Word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

via

When learning how to balance for ballet, my teacher would always try and make things harder. She would tell us to close our eyes. At first, this seems simple. After all, our eye muscles aren't supporting our balance. Closing our eyes shouldn't change a thing.

But once we close our eyes, we begin to lose our balance. We struggle to maintain the desired position without a stabilizing focal point. Any change in weight or outside forces causes us to wobble. Shake. Struggle. And then fall.

This hymn has repeated in my heart for the past few weeks, especially as life tried to take my vision off of Jesus and onto the pressing matters at hard. But when I close my eyes to Jesus, I start to fall at any shift or outside force. It doesn't take much, for it can be a busy week, an upcoming project, a tense relationship, or a desire to please people.

But in the middle of this distracting life, this challenging life, this joyful life, let's keep our eyes on Jesus. He will stabilize us. He will keep us going in the right direction. In the hurried moments, whisper to yourself the truths in this hymn and keep breathing in the love of Christ!

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

The Year We Called 2015

The Year We Called 2015

They say times, flies, and I would agree. But for for me for in 2015, time danced. It danced to a changing tune of growing up, to the captivating sounds of NYC streets, to the soft melodies of challenges and slowness, to the exciting beats of friendship and family, and to the familiar tune of Jesus' grace transforming everything.

It danced with vigor and speed. It danced with grace and beauty. It danced with mystery and a touch of sadness. But it danced, and I wouldn't redo 2015; I wouldn't take it out of the choreography of the dance God plans for my life.

Looking back, I realize that so many things happened this year. It makes me so happy to think of them all that, with the help of the lilting backdrop of the Cinderella soundtrack, I might cry! God did so much this year, and because I love lists, here's 15 things that changed me a bit in 2015 (in my best chronological order):

1. In 2015 I failed my first audition. Before I thought much about going to New York for ballet, I wanted to go to Houston Ballet. But God had other plans; He knew best, and even though I felt pretty bad about messing up those pirouettes, I rejoice for the experience!

2. In 2015 I started truly blogging! I didn't realize how much I would love writing out these posts and interacting with so many wonderful people! I didn't know how much work and time a blog took, how much dedication and editing I needed to make it look nice and reach out to people. But through blogging the past few months, I've learned how to have eyes that see. I see so many more opportunities to interact with God's grace in everything! The theme of this blog probably impacted me more than anyone who read my posts!

3. In 2015 I fell on stage for the first time. But what I didn't realize at the time of the fall was how many times I would be able to give God the glory through that experience! It really blew my mind how such a simple story like a fall on stage could go so many place. First, I shared it with people who came to my recital, then to you guys on the blog, then to many dancers who didn't know Jesus this summer, and also to fellow local dancers. And each time I had the opportunity to share God's grace at work in what would normally be a bad situation.

4. In 2015 I started a Bible study that I'd dreamed of for a while. I had this idea of high school girls mentoring and befriending middle school girls even while the younger girls inspire the older girls. And so I helped get the ball rolling for this great time together, which is still making an impact under my sister's leadership! But this just showed me how sometimes we just need to go and do these brave, new ideas. Faith is paired with action.

5. In 2015 I graduated high school! I felt pretty excited to move on to the next chapter of life and had so much fun going to my last youth group camp as a camper, taking senior pics, going to senior prom, and throwing my best party yet!

6. In 2015 I flew to and stayed in New York for six weeks! This made my year. AAB grew me and gave me much more confidence in life and Christ. And NYC can't be described adequately in this short space, so just read this post if you missed it. I made so many memories this summer that I won't forget quickly, like sharing the gospel at two in the morning to a girl who lives in South Africa and walking into Times Square at one in the morning to be greeted by so many lights and promises of another great day in the city.

7. In 2015 I realized the difference between "could" and "should." In ballet, I didn't dream much of dancing professionally. I think that God just doesn't want that for me, but sometimes I feel like because I could have gone for it that I should have gone for it. Many people around me this summer planned on going so many places with ballet, but I just wanted to teach ballet in my hometown. I felt like I wasted my potential, like I disappointed everyone, including myself. I questioned my decisions in 2015, especially when I got encouragement and challenges from AAB, but I feel confident that God is leading me on the path that I chose. Because winning in life doesn't mean winning according to the world. There is something greater in the world than success.

8. In 2015 I went new places. Namely, NYC. But I also went to concerts, the beach, movies, parties, and many other new and exciting places.

9. In 2015 I started college! I expected it to be harder actually. I think that I'm ready to start really loving college now that I've learned a bit of the ropes. The first semester went by with new friendships, new schedules, and a bit of learning. Now I'm excited for what the other semesters will bring!

10. In 2015 I continued to learn about friendships. Friendships take work. Sometimes I want to give up and just wait for friends to find me, but I fought that temptation this year and started cultivating more friendships. It took time, texts, and tears, but this year brought hope and laughter, some beginnings of what I hope to be wonderful friendships!

11. In 2015 I went in the direction God planned for me. I already talked a bit about this, but I decided not to go off to some expensive school for ballet but to stay at home. And I also decided to switch my major from business to mass communications, and I will have to wait to see how I like that. But I do think that God placed all of these things in order, and I trust Him. I want to follow Him.

12. In 2015 I actually went to football games! Yes, I went to football games, and this is kind of a new thing for me. I only went to two football games during high school, one local college game and one NFL game, but I loved the experience of going to the games, cheering on my team, and being with fun friends!

13. In 2015 I thought more. I am so thankful for a mind ready to learn and a heart that searches for the truth! God gave me such a gift in those things, and this year I made even more connections about the Bible and more thoughts about life. In 2016 I want to take even more advantage of the resources around me and continue to grow in knowledge and truth!

14. In 2015 I finished my first semester of college with a 4.0! The ease of college surprised me, and although I don't expect it to stay that way, I am glad that it didn't start with many challenges. With this first semester done, I feel ready to start embracing college!

15. In 2015 God did some pretty amazing things, but now, at the end of the holidays, I'm reminded that the greatest thing that "I" did this year, I didn't even do! The greatest achievement of 2015 is that God was in me, with me. Immanuel!

How was y'all's year? I want to hear all about it, and please comment if you did a post recapping the year! Here's to a joyful 2016!
