Grace In Disney World- The Waiting

Grace In Disney World- The Waiting

21 DAYS UNTIL I MOVE TO DISNEY WORLD!!!

In case you didn't know, I will be a part of the Disney College Program this fall, and I couldn't be more excited! I posted the announcement a while ago, but much has happened since then. Also, nothing has happened since then.

Mostly, I've been waiting.

Wondering and wondering and wondering and wondering when will my life begin

Maybe you're waiting, too. Perhaps for you college starts in the fall. Maybe you're waiting for a new job or a move or simply a new school year. Maybe you, too, are counting down the days instead of making today count.

If so, I have some words of encouragement for you, but it is really just one word:

Today.

Let's learn the art of today.

The art of one day at a time kind of grace.

The art of diligence in today without worry about tomorrow.

"Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6:34)

Jesus knew that we could only handle one day at a time. He knew that our hands are small and our capacity to do life even smaller. Although He is unlimited and does everything at once, He created us to do one thing at a time, one day at a time.

Today.

For a planner, though, today can be hard, especially if tomorrow is uncertain. For a girl who likes to know everything, today isn't always enough. I want to know tomorrow, too. And sometimes living in today is hard simply because tomorrow looks so much more exciting.

Today is hard, small, and scary. Living fully in today might be life's hardest challenge, a challenge we can't fulfill on our own.

That's the point. We can't live today alone. We can't live today confident in our own ability to handle and plan things. We also can't live today in hopes of tomorrow.

This is where Jesus comes in to save the day, to save today.

You see, Jesus calls us to live today with Him. He calls us daily to lean into Him as our anchor and hope, as our helper and friend. We can trust in His unchanging grace for all of our tomorrows as we diligently and joyfully live out all of our todays with Him.

Maybe that's why Jesus instructed us to ask God to give us our daily bread. Maybe that's why God only allowed the Israelites to take one day's worth of manna at a time. This way we keep coming back to Him each morning with new need. This way we receive great joy in His provision each and every today.

The beautiful thing about today is that Jesus is here. The God who created time steps into time with us to do today. And He loves us today. He wants to talk to us today. He is providing for us and holding us today. He has a mission and purpose for us today, even if today is hard, boring, or uncertain.

How will we live today? Even in the waiting, even in the uncertainty and troubles that tomorrow may bring, we are given a precious gift in today. Let's celebrate and work in it.

Are you in a period of waiting or moving? How have your learned to live in today? Are you excited for the many other Grace in Disney World posts coming in the near future?

The Adventures of a Baby Blue Convertible

The Adventures of a Baby Blue Convertible

Meet Audrey, my new(ish) baby blue convertible bug.

I'm kinda in love with her.

Every time I drive her, I love her a bit more.

Every time I drive her, I feel a bit more fabulous.

Every time I drive her, I smile. A lot.

She plays music oh so nicely.

And when the weather's nice, we have a lot of fun.

She may be small.

She may not be able to fit all of my stuff for Disney this fall.

But Audrey is freedom.

Audrey is classy.

Audrey is messy hair and hands in the air.

She takes a few elegance tips from her namesake, Audrey Hepburn.

She drives like a gentle wave of water. Or a fierce shopaholic after that last pair of shoes.

I'm not one for cleaning cars, but I want to clean Audrey.

I'm not one to like driving, but I like driving Audrey.

So, meet Audrey.

She's kinda the best.

Comment your thoughts on Audrey, and give @emroseimages a follow on Instagram for these AMAZING pictures!

How Sweet it Is to Trust in God

How Sweet it Is to Trust in God

God is trustworthy.  He never fails to deserve our complete and joyful trust. His ways are perfect; there is no flaw in them.

I can't see those truths clearly now, but I see them clearer than before.

As I reflected upon this past school year, I realized that trusting God united all of the lessons I learned.

I faced the truth that my future won't necessarily involve marriage/dating, at least not in my preferred timeline.

I realized that the career I'm set upon isn't set in stone. God could call me elsewhere, and I would be joyful in that.

I realized that trusting God means not being in control. Like breaking my foot.

In all of these things, I see God's Spirit in me, leading me toward a greater joy in trusting God. He wants to lead You in this trust as well. Isn't that exciting?

Join with me in this prayer, a prayer inspired by a Bible study I did on trusting God. Say it out loud if you can. Investigate scripture that speaks truth into your worries about the future. Start with Proverbs 3:5-6, Proverbs 16:1-4, Matthew 6:19-34, Romans 15:13, 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, Philippians 4:4-7, Hebrews 13:8, and 1 John 3:2-3.

Father,

You are all-knowing. Nothing takes You by surprise or catches You off guard. You have written out the Story of the world, including my small part. You have taken time to plan every day of mine before I took a breath in this world. You plan it perfectly, too. Not like I would.

Oh, how good You are and worthy of trust.

Oh, how good it is for me to trust You.

But this is hard. I like to know, to control. I like neat lists and a good five year plan. In the moment, I am prone to worry about every little thing. I worry about my body, friendships, schooling, career, family, and even the weather and how it will change my daily schedule.

What would it look like, though, if I followed Your ways and didn't worry? What if I walked into the storm confidently obeying You and trusting You to either provide an umbrella or teach me to dance in the rain? What if I took every chance I got to bear Your fruit and have joy in Your Spirit?

Thank You for being You, a good, loving, all-knowing Author of the greatest Story ever. Thank You for never changing. Thank You for Your Spirit who is helping me to walk in trust and live with courage.

May Your name shine in my life, wherever You lead me,

Your Princess

What has God been teaching (or challenging) you about trust?

I'm Tired of Being Okay

I'm Tired of Being Okay

"I just want to be okay."

"Are you okay?"

"I'm okay."

"Okay."

To be honest, I'm tired of the word "okay." I'm tired of seeking to just be "okay" in life, but that's all our culture excepts us to be, if that. Check out all of the articles on Odyssey on how girls are becoming okay with not being okay. Something is missing here.

I recently fractured my foot. That's not an okay circumstance by any means, and I struggle with it. I struggle with not dancing. I struggle with worry and frustration and anxiety and loneliness. I struggle to put on my one shoe for goodness sake!

People ask me every day if I'm okay. At first I couldn't answer them affirmatively. My soul felt safe in the hands of God, and I trusted Him more than my mind knew, but I struggled.

Then I realized just how okay I am in Christ. I realized that He is enough. Even if I can never dance again (that's not a concern, by the way), He is ENOUGH.

But God showed me something that BLEW. MY. SOUL.

Listen up, folks, 'cause it could change your soul too.

God doesn't just make us okay.

He isn't only enough for us.

HE MAKES US GREAT.

HE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.

Oh, I'm about to cry right now thinking about the immeasurable grace of the gift of God. Yet we try to sum it up in the words okay or enough. We try to contain the presence of God into something that we can understand and measure.

For we can't imagine what it would be like to be great. After all, we are so sinful and weak and small. We get scared of a broken foot and break down crying. Regularly. We can't manage to even be okay, so why would we expect to be great?

Good thing God works on a different level than us.

"But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!... For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace reign in life through that one man, Jesus Christ."

Romans 5:15, 17, emphasis mine

How much more.

How much more.

Are we living the how much more life? Or are we simply seeking to get by, to be okay?

There are points in our lives when seeking to be okay is enough of a battle for our souls. I had to fight to get to a place where I was okay when I fractured my foot. I am not denying that there are times when the knowledge that God is enough for us is all that we can handle.

But do we want to stay in the okay place forever? Do we not want to taste the immeasurable greatness and glory of God? What is waiting for us on the other side of "okay?" What will we find when we beckon the Spirit of God to not simply be enough for us but to overflow in us?

I don't have an answer for you, not yet. But I'm tired of staying in an okay place, not when God offers to us (at great cost) the much more. So I'm praying to the Holy Spirit. I'm leaning into the gift of grace knowing that there is so much more out there than I can imagine.

Will you live the much more life with me?

Grace In Everything- Two Years Later

Grace In Everything- Two Years Later

GRACE IN EVERYTHING TURNS TWO TODAY!!!!!!!

Part of me feels shocked that it's been that long, and the other part can't remember a time where I didn't learn something and instantly start forming a blog post in my heart.

First of all, THANK YOU.

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU.

Without you, reader, Grace In Everything couldn't have done what it's done. And what has Grace In Everything done, you ask? Let me tell you:

Two Years Later: Grace In Everything changed my life.

It changed how I viewed the lessons God teaches me. I started looking for them and seeking to interpret them into thoughts and words that others, and mainly I, could understand. God made me so much more aware of life through blogging.

It changed how I used my gifts. If you can't tell, I have the spiritual gift of teaching, and this little blog offered me chances to discover how to use this gift to help people, even as they helped me.

It changed how I spent my time. Because, SPOILER ALERT, blogging takes time. I've struggled with this a few times (I'm sure you noticed). Sometimes I didn't have the time to properly blog, but I've learned about time management and also how to write up a blog post in one night!

It changed my major. I went into college majoring in marketing because that was the useful, practical thing to do. I liked business, but it didn't feel like me. That's when I discovered mass communications. My experience with blogging and enjoyment of connecting with the "masses" prompted me to change my major to what I now LOVE.

Two Years Later: I wrote some fun posts.

In these two years, I published 108 posts, so picking a favorite is near impossible. (Like, trying to decide my top five almost hurt physically.) Buuut here a few that I'm pretty darn proud of:

I often go back to this post myself when I'm struggling to know what to do next.

This post documents my adventure dancing at AAB in New York two summers ago. Man, I learned so much then!

I poured out my deepest struggle here, and it was hard. It was hard to face the facts and tell others how I struggle. It was worth it, though, because Jesus shines through me, and in Him, my weakness is strength.

I love outfit posts, but my fashion testimony in this one made it a favorite!

Guys, this post freed me so much. It freed me to be me.

Not mentioned but still treasured are almost every other post I've published. Nbd.

Two Years Later: I met some cool people.

Whenever life steals me away from blogging, I feel something missing. And no, it's not the sound of fingers typing on a keyboard (school essays will never let me forget that noise). It's the friends that I've made through blogging. Y'all really make it worthwhile.

Grace, like, I blog for you. You are such a good friend that you deserve your own post of appreciation.

Erin, I think I've finally gotten over how weird it is that God teaches us the same things at the same time. God is just cool like that.

Emily, you make my heart smile.

Abbie, you never cease to inspire me.

Olivia, you are the coolest.

Madison, I didn't even know someone could do that with fashion until you showed me.

There are so many other people too. Really, every person that has commented, messaged, or contacted Grace In Everything is a blessing to me and the blog, so thank you.

Two Years Later: I did some cool things.

CHECK IT OUT!!

Paper Comets Magazine. I was a part of a AWESOME collaboration that put together an online magazine! Shout-out to Abigail and Ava for making this happen! A bunch of spectacular people designed pages focused on different inspiring words, so you should check it out.

Burning Youth. Speaking of awesome collaborations, I am a part of the Burning Youth community. Katie and Abbiee started a fabulous network of bloggers who have a thing or two to say about life. Yes, I haven't posted in a while, but that's about to change.  But seriously, if you want some inspiration, go check it out.

Instagram. I went out and started an Instagram account for Grace In Everything, and it's been fun! Give your girl a follow.

Facebook. Yes, Facebook still exists. Plus, it's been very useful in promoting Grace In Everything. Like the page!

Twitter. Sometimes I'm funny. Most of the time, I just quote my sisters.

Two Years Later: I'm looking forward to another two years

For the next two years, I have some fun things planned, like...

A YouTube Channel! I'm in the process of starting a YouTube Channel dedicated to my Disney Adventure! It's called Hannah's Disney Adventure- Grace in Disney World. (See what I did there?)

More posts about college life and tips on how to survive. Many of you are in college or about to start, so I'm going to post more about how thrive and enjoy college!

More posts about beauty and body image. This is one of my most passionate topics, so expect more Edition 139 posts.

A new look! I'm learning how to code websites, and I've already started on creating a face lift for Grace In Everything!

Comment below if you remember anything from this rediculously long post! (Since it's my blogiversary, I'll allow myself a bit of grace here.) What's one of your favorite posts from Grace In Everything? Are you as excited for these next two years?

AND THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! GRACE IN EVERYTHING WOULDN'T BE HERE WITHOUT ALL OF Y'ALL!!!! So much love to each and every one of you <3 div="">

I'M MOVING TO DISNEY WORLD (And You Can Too)

I'M MOVING TO DISNEY WORLD (And You Can Too)

It's the happiest place on earth, the most magical realm in the world. It's where all of our wishes will come true, and dreams aren't as impossible as they looked before. It's Disney World/my new home.

Because, guess what? I MOVE TO DISNEY WORLD IN THE FALL!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm done.

Wait...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!

Better.

Around a month ago, I applied for the Disney College Program. A friend of mine (who had a LOVELY blog at Meaghan Mercy Blog) did it last year, but I didn't know if I wanted to do it. It kept coming to mind, though, so I prayed about it then went for it. I took the leap of courage and started to dream. I got through the first two stages of the application process in two days. A little over two weeks (and many prayers, tears, and late nights of researching) later, I was in the program!

Since starting my Disney Adventure, people have asked me so many questions. It's almost all people talk to me about now, but I'm totally fine with that. Talking about Disney World will never bore me. I'm sure you want to ask some of these questions too, so I present to you the most magical Q&A ever to grace Grace In Everything:

Question 1: What is the program?

That's a good question.

The Disney College Program is an internship of sorts for college students where they spend a semester working at Disney World or Disneyland. Participants gain on-the-job experience and learn about how Disney does customer service the best. (If you've ever been to Disney, you know that this is true.) The jobs offered range from merchandise to character to attractions attendant. Participants can stay in provided housing and room with other DCP members (aka, new best friends).

Question 2: So you'll be a Disney Princess, right?

Technically, yes, I will be a Disney Princess. After all, I am a Princess (daughter of the King) and working at Disney World. Therefore, I am a Disney Princess. I will not, however, wear a wig and sign autographs all day.

I did audition to work as a character or performer, as that was my first preference in jobs, but I didn't make the audition. I would've LOVED to work as a character, but I can't have everything, right? The experience of auditioning helped me to grow in Jesus, though, so it was not for naught.

Question 3: What will you be doing?

I will go to the parks, duh! DCP members have free admission to the parks when they are not working (basically the biggest perk ever). Speaking of working, though, I will do a lot of that during the program. DCP members don't only go on adventures in Orlando. They also work a part to full-time job in their role.

I will work as a merchandise cast member (that's what Disney calls their employees). I won't know which park or resort I will work at until I arrive, but I hope that I get Magic Kingdom (my favorite park) or Hollywood Studios (the park with my favorite hours).

Question 4: Are you taking off of school?

I'm hoping to take the semester off and focus on my work/adventuring, but I'm still working on that with my university. Disney also offers classes as an optional part of the program. These classes focus on things like hospitality, communications, and leadership. I haven't decided if I will take one of these.

Question 5: How long will you be at Disney?

I will leave mid-August and get back in the beginning of January. Yes, Disney keeps me over the holidays. And yes, I will be coming back. I have heard of many people that, after completing the program, never went back home, not really. Many of them later moved to Orlando and work as full-time cast members now, so I'd better be careful or I won't come home! (Except I love my hometown and have many plans there, such as finishing college, so I think I'm safe.)

Question 6: Are you excited?

You have no idea how excited I am for the program! My life is already consumed with Disney. It didn't help that I spent Mardi Gras break there partying it up for my sister's senior trip. Even though I'm home, Disney claims much of my thoughts and plans. I'm pretty much just singing Rapunzel's "When will my life begin" song. Except I don't wake up at 7:00 to do chores.

Question 7: How can I apply?

This program is limited to students enrolled in college, but if you are in college and want to spend half a year in Disney, go to the Disney College Program website and click "Apply Now." From there you will fill out a resume of sorts. If you get past that, you complete a web-interview, which is like a personality/responsibility quiz. The final step is a phone interview. If you are considering applying now or in the future, I'd be happy to help in any way. They are still accepting applications for the fall, so it's not too late to join me on my Disney Adventure!

This is only the first of many posts about my Disney Adventure. I'm thinking about starting a YouTube channel and vlogging about DCP. Many DCP members vlog, and it might give me another chance to learn about digital sharing and producing.

Comment below what has been going on in your life! I've been on the busier side of late and need updates ASAP. Also, what do you think about more Disney Adventure posts/videos? Y'all are the best, and have a magical rest of your week.

It's Okay Not to Fit In

It's Okay Not to Fit In

Do you ever feel like a puzzle piece that never fits in the puzzle? It's like you're almost there, almost in the picture, surrounded by other pieces that all fit in with you. But your edges are different. They just don't quite fit.

This can be a dissatisfying place to stay. You stand there, on the outskirts of a group that you can't quite connect with. I feel like I've been there my whole life, a stray puzzle piece missing her puzzle. I mingle with a lot of different groups; one edge of my personality puzzle piece fits with the bloggers, another with the ballerinas, another with the church group, and so on. One of my biggest dreams is to fit- all of the way- with a group and let that group be my group, the place where I don't feel different, don't feel even a little bit on the outside.

Now I'm thinking that will never happen.

I've realized, however, that my mismatched personality is a gift, not a curse. To stand a bit aloof doesn't mean that I'm not important and doesn't mean I can't enjoy the company of others. My uniqueness doesn't need to hold me back; instead I should take joy in the fact that God's made me different, a puzzle piece completely unique.

In this state of uniqueness, I also have the opportunity to help the various groups that I almost fit in. I bring to them a splash of color that they didn't expect.

I'm a practical thinker in an artsy blog world.

I'm a balance seeker in the extreme of the ballet world.

I'm a passionate truth seeker, big-picture watcher, in a Church filled with opinions.

I'm different. Not better, not worse. Maybe one day I'll find the group that possesses all of the right edges for me, but until then, I will find joy in the outskirts, in the almosts. I will grow where God's planted me and help others to grow as well.

So here's to the stray puzzle pieces, the people who don't have a group, who don't quite fit in. Keep following Jesus, because He's making a home for you where you will fit so perfectly that you'll never leave!

"Jesus replied, 'Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head.'" (Matthew 8:20)

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms; if it were no so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." (John 14:1-2)

God's grace be with you,

Words Blooming Forth

Words Blooming Forth

My words have been coming slowly as of late.

Or perhaps my mind pushes them out of the way.

I can't fully blame my schedule, family, or situation. For somehow I trapped the words inside, and their song dulled down. Down, down, down. Later, later, later.

But words never die. They rarely remain silent for long. They may go underground for a spell, but this makes them grow stronger roots for the upcoming blossom.

My words are blooming forth again, I can feel it.

Lovely tree I found at one of the camps this summer

Words, I give you the freedom to come out now. Soul, Jesus is your freedom to rest and breath, even when the body is hard at work. Mind, you can let go now and embrace the now. Body, even you can find the balance between work and play. Heart, prepare now. Dig deep roots. Grow a bloom that can only come from God. Strength, you can lean into Jesus.

Can you feel it? The words inside of you? They are digging into your soul and bringing up something beautiful. They may seem quiet right now, but words never die.

They bloom.

Still lovely flowers I found at a different camp this summer
.
.
.
.
.
I really want to apologize right now for my accidental blog vacation. But to apologize detracts from the lesson that I learned. Sometimes, words come slowly. Sometimes, I have to wrestle with the words too busy before I can do anything else.

I can say this with absolute certainty, though.

I REALLY REALLY MISSED Y'ALL AND BLOGGING AND READING BLOGS AND GAH BASICALLY ALL OF IT!!! (except for technical issues. Those I can go without.)

Although I haven't been active blogging, I've been quite active in many other places in life. Namely, I went on a mission trip!!! I worked in Indiana for a week, and it opened my soul to a new level of boldness and selflessness. More on that in the future. For now, I just want to say I'm back. And I've realized in this blog break how much I appreciate each and every one of you! Blogging has become such an intricate part of my life, that I went a little crazy without it, even for just a few weeks!

Comment below what you've been up to this summer! And do you ever feel the words of your soul dig deep only to bloom forth?

BUNCHES OF LOVE AND CHOCOLATE YOUR WAY!

Princess Hannah

p.s. I guest posted on the MOST AMAZING BLOG (which is Abbie's blog, duh) a couple of weeks ago in case you didn't see it. (If you commented, I recently went back and replayed to them all. It came out during my mission trip and I couldn't reply to all of them.) And since words never die, go give it a read and a late comment. Right now I'm all about those late comments considering I'm catching up from a month's worth of posts!

p.p.s. Also, exciting stuff coming your way from Freckled Minds, a new creative movement I've had the honor of being a part of so far! Go check out the new site and dance around in excitement about the things coming from this spectacular initiative!

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou My Vision

via Hannah Rose Beasley
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my Wisdom, and thou my true Word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

via

When learning how to balance for ballet, my teacher would always try and make things harder. She would tell us to close our eyes. At first, this seems simple. After all, our eye muscles aren't supporting our balance. Closing our eyes shouldn't change a thing.

But once we close our eyes, we begin to lose our balance. We struggle to maintain the desired position without a stabilizing focal point. Any change in weight or outside forces causes us to wobble. Shake. Struggle. And then fall.

This hymn has repeated in my heart for the past few weeks, especially as life tried to take my vision off of Jesus and onto the pressing matters at hard. But when I close my eyes to Jesus, I start to fall at any shift or outside force. It doesn't take much, for it can be a busy week, an upcoming project, a tense relationship, or a desire to please people.

But in the middle of this distracting life, this challenging life, this joyful life, let's keep our eyes on Jesus. He will stabilize us. He will keep us going in the right direction. In the hurried moments, whisper to yourself the truths in this hymn and keep breathing in the love of Christ!

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

When Life Gets Stressful

When Life Gets Stressful

Sometimes life feels like a marathon. It runs and runs and runs, and we struggle to catch up. We can't seem to swallow each breath in our lungs as we chase life down. School. Homework. Family. Friends. Extracurricular. Make sure our rooms don't look like zoos. Showers should probably happen. And somehow living with Jesus and resting in Him.

Resting in Jesus. How can we do that when our minds go a thousand thoughts a minute, keeping track of all of the things that we must do? The things things listed above must happen, so how can we rest and find joy at the same time?

I struggled with this question last week. I felt stressed and weighed down. I had many school related things and decisions to make, and I needed to get it all done before Friday because I led a Disciple-Now all weekend. (More on Disciple-Now later!)

But God (notice my two favorite words) reminded me of three things that changed my stress into joy. He somehow penetrated my busy mind to give me hope in Christ and rest in His joy. He showed me a different way to go, a way that led me to...

1. Pray

If we desire joy, we must ask for it. I don't think that we realize the humility and simplicity of coming to God with all of our hearts, even the desire for rest or extra strength.

"So I [Jesus] say to you: 'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (Luke 11:9)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

2. Release the outcomes

Sometimes (more than sometimes), we just can't do it all. But I know a God who can. God makes the days and plans them out. And we simply need to trust in God's sovereignty even when we feel the world racing around us. God's will (not our will) will prevail, let's put our hope in that.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" (Matthew 6:26-27)

3. Find joy when working hard

Resting in God doesn't mean that we stop working! Rather, we find joy in our work. We receive a renewed vigor because we know that God is with us, breathing into our souls and shaping our days with care.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as working for the Lord and not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23-24)

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." (Romans 12:11-12)

Emily Freemen in her book Simply Tuesday captures these thoughts beautifully:

"To know that the work will be completed by the Spirit of God and not by my effort means that I can sit down on the inside even as my hands are fast at work. It means I don't have to keep pace with a fast-moving world even as I am engaged in the activity of it." (page 222)

God invites us to come. Right now, in the rush of life, we can come and rest in Him. Pray, release, and work. And there we will find joy.

Comment below how your week is going. Is it wearing you down? Are you finding joy? What are your thankful for?

Sitting in the Silence

Sitting in the Silence

We live in a busy world.

We live in a loud world.

And these things don't make the world bad. I love how life always moves and always speaks, for work creates beauty, and words give love. But I discovered this week that I need more than satisfying schedules and gratifying words.

This week I discovered the beauty of silence.

I sat on my bed last Sunday afternoon, tired from trying, ready to keep trying, and trusting in Jesus. (Yes, I feel the confusion going on here.) Sunday brings me so much joy, and usually prayers bloom out of me during the long afternoon, but last Sunday, I couldn't find the energy to form words. And I didn't feel the need to say them.

And so I just sat there with Jesus. I reminded myself of His wonderful character and believed in my identity in Him. I didn't say anything. I didn't go through the list of prayer requests I built into my mind. I didn't mentally work through all of the events and thoughts from the past week. I just sat there.

It was enough to stay silent in Jesus' presence.

I imagined that the disciples sat with Jesus in silence many a night. I can see them sitting around a fire at night, their feet sore from a long day, their minds unable to grasp Who sat with them, and their hearts full of questions about the day, about the journey, and about Jesus. I can feel them start to utter these complaints, doubts, and questions when they stop. They look at Jesus. And they decide that it is simply enough to sit in silence for tonight.

I've gone a long time thinking that I needed to express every thought, write every idea, and pray with complete sentences. When I drive alone, I turn on the music. When I shower, I pray through the prayer requests I've stored up for the day. When I sit in my room, I'm always thinking, planning, and processing out loud, or at least with loud thoughts. I didn't develop the habit of staying quiet every now and then to sit with Jesus and examine my soul.

But after the silence of Sunday, my soul feels a bit more. My heart beats a bit more. And my mind rests a bit more. Sitting with Jesus changed the way I thought about life. For after that afternoon, I realized that I didn't have to come before God with many words or a focused heart. I could give Him my silence with just as much worship as I give Him my song. I could give Him my confused, tired, and trying heart with joy rather than shame.

The silence in my soul is a welcoming place now. And God wants to move in your silent moments as well. Will you take the challenge with me over the next few days to set aside five minutes (give or take, because we will not be legalistic about this) daily to simply sit with Jesus in silence? Will you turn off your phone, stop dwelling on those thoughts that never seem to leave, and start reminding yourself of Who God is and who you are in Him? Will you come to Him as you are, knowing that He is enough? Will you learn to welcome the mystery of vacancy and the wonder of the quiet minutes?

As I finish this post, sitting in the silence, I feel content and thankful. Not because I had a great day, not because I have it all together, and not because I feel spectacular about things. I don't. But I know that Jesus is with me and loves me right now in the silence. And that is enough.

Comment below if you have ever sat in silence. Also, I know our lives are so busy and loud, but can you share a recent moment where God broke through and showed grace in little or big ways?

Thank-you so much for reading my heartbeat today!

Little Things in the Big Picture

Little Things in the Big Picture

"Enjoy the little things, but never forget the big picture."

yes, I did just quote my own instagram caption, don't judge.

Yesterday I started my first day of my second semester of college, and it felt much different than the first semester. Somehow I have this feeling of joy about things to come. This joy comes from a sense of mission for the gospel, the comfort of friends around me, and the promise of new adventures around the corner. It comes from smiling at the little things while never forgetting the big picture.

For I can easily miss both the little joys and the eternal plan.

And so I want to look around. To laugh with the little things and keep my eyes focused on God's Story. For Christ is with us here and now, but He is so much bigger than here and now.

He's in the little things like:

>the way the sunset plays outside the window in the ballet studio, surrounding the bare trees with pinks and purples.

>the tidbits of conversations that fill my first days of class, talk of welcome and introductions.

>the pieces of cold cookie dough that I spoon out of the bowl, crunchy sugar paired with creamy butter and chocolate chips.

>the giggles that erupt from listening to High School Musical in honor of its 10th anniversary. (Now I feel old!)

>the satisfaction of wearing pearls, especially the huge, real, pearl earrings I got for Christmas.

>the still stars at the end of a long day, stars that each stand for a promise, that each testify to God's faithfulness.

But I also want to train my soul to see the bigger story, for God is writing the Story of the world in ways like:

>the conversations that lead to relationships that lead to grace-sharing opportunities

>the encouragement I give and receive for God's Kingdom with new and old dear friends.

>the way God's Word I read aligns with what happens in my day and even what songs I end up listening to.

>the sense of joy in God's mission, which is a new development for me.

Friends, as I sit here in my pjs at the end of my second day back, I feel so thankful. I'm thankful for the little things and for the big things. And I'm thankful for you. Truly. You're going to see a few changes here on the blog, namely, I want to post shorter things more often, but I'm putting my hope in Jesus and want this blog to be an outflow of that!

Here's to little things in a big picture. Let's chat in the comments about the little things going on in your life and the big picture that God shows you!

The Year We Called 2015

The Year We Called 2015

They say times, flies, and I would agree. But for for me for in 2015, time danced. It danced to a changing tune of growing up, to the captivating sounds of NYC streets, to the soft melodies of challenges and slowness, to the exciting beats of friendship and family, and to the familiar tune of Jesus' grace transforming everything.

It danced with vigor and speed. It danced with grace and beauty. It danced with mystery and a touch of sadness. But it danced, and I wouldn't redo 2015; I wouldn't take it out of the choreography of the dance God plans for my life.

Looking back, I realize that so many things happened this year. It makes me so happy to think of them all that, with the help of the lilting backdrop of the Cinderella soundtrack, I might cry! God did so much this year, and because I love lists, here's 15 things that changed me a bit in 2015 (in my best chronological order):

1. In 2015 I failed my first audition. Before I thought much about going to New York for ballet, I wanted to go to Houston Ballet. But God had other plans; He knew best, and even though I felt pretty bad about messing up those pirouettes, I rejoice for the experience!

2. In 2015 I started truly blogging! I didn't realize how much I would love writing out these posts and interacting with so many wonderful people! I didn't know how much work and time a blog took, how much dedication and editing I needed to make it look nice and reach out to people. But through blogging the past few months, I've learned how to have eyes that see. I see so many more opportunities to interact with God's grace in everything! The theme of this blog probably impacted me more than anyone who read my posts!

3. In 2015 I fell on stage for the first time. But what I didn't realize at the time of the fall was how many times I would be able to give God the glory through that experience! It really blew my mind how such a simple story like a fall on stage could go so many place. First, I shared it with people who came to my recital, then to you guys on the blog, then to many dancers who didn't know Jesus this summer, and also to fellow local dancers. And each time I had the opportunity to share God's grace at work in what would normally be a bad situation.

4. In 2015 I started a Bible study that I'd dreamed of for a while. I had this idea of high school girls mentoring and befriending middle school girls even while the younger girls inspire the older girls. And so I helped get the ball rolling for this great time together, which is still making an impact under my sister's leadership! But this just showed me how sometimes we just need to go and do these brave, new ideas. Faith is paired with action.

5. In 2015 I graduated high school! I felt pretty excited to move on to the next chapter of life and had so much fun going to my last youth group camp as a camper, taking senior pics, going to senior prom, and throwing my best party yet!

6. In 2015 I flew to and stayed in New York for six weeks! This made my year. AAB grew me and gave me much more confidence in life and Christ. And NYC can't be described adequately in this short space, so just read this post if you missed it. I made so many memories this summer that I won't forget quickly, like sharing the gospel at two in the morning to a girl who lives in South Africa and walking into Times Square at one in the morning to be greeted by so many lights and promises of another great day in the city.

7. In 2015 I realized the difference between "could" and "should." In ballet, I didn't dream much of dancing professionally. I think that God just doesn't want that for me, but sometimes I feel like because I could have gone for it that I should have gone for it. Many people around me this summer planned on going so many places with ballet, but I just wanted to teach ballet in my hometown. I felt like I wasted my potential, like I disappointed everyone, including myself. I questioned my decisions in 2015, especially when I got encouragement and challenges from AAB, but I feel confident that God is leading me on the path that I chose. Because winning in life doesn't mean winning according to the world. There is something greater in the world than success.

8. In 2015 I went new places. Namely, NYC. But I also went to concerts, the beach, movies, parties, and many other new and exciting places.

9. In 2015 I started college! I expected it to be harder actually. I think that I'm ready to start really loving college now that I've learned a bit of the ropes. The first semester went by with new friendships, new schedules, and a bit of learning. Now I'm excited for what the other semesters will bring!

10. In 2015 I continued to learn about friendships. Friendships take work. Sometimes I want to give up and just wait for friends to find me, but I fought that temptation this year and started cultivating more friendships. It took time, texts, and tears, but this year brought hope and laughter, some beginnings of what I hope to be wonderful friendships!

11. In 2015 I went in the direction God planned for me. I already talked a bit about this, but I decided not to go off to some expensive school for ballet but to stay at home. And I also decided to switch my major from business to mass communications, and I will have to wait to see how I like that. But I do think that God placed all of these things in order, and I trust Him. I want to follow Him.

12. In 2015 I actually went to football games! Yes, I went to football games, and this is kind of a new thing for me. I only went to two football games during high school, one local college game and one NFL game, but I loved the experience of going to the games, cheering on my team, and being with fun friends!

13. In 2015 I thought more. I am so thankful for a mind ready to learn and a heart that searches for the truth! God gave me such a gift in those things, and this year I made even more connections about the Bible and more thoughts about life. In 2016 I want to take even more advantage of the resources around me and continue to grow in knowledge and truth!

14. In 2015 I finished my first semester of college with a 4.0! The ease of college surprised me, and although I don't expect it to stay that way, I am glad that it didn't start with many challenges. With this first semester done, I feel ready to start embracing college!

15. In 2015 God did some pretty amazing things, but now, at the end of the holidays, I'm reminded that the greatest thing that "I" did this year, I didn't even do! The greatest achievement of 2015 is that God was in me, with me. Immanuel!

How was y'all's year? I want to hear all about it, and please comment if you did a post recapping the year! Here's to a joyful 2016!
