Contentment Isn't the Answer to Singleness

Contentment Isn't the Answer to Singleness

"It was when I finally felt content in my singleness that I found the perfect someone. The timing couldn't have been more perfect."

"Once I stopped looking, it just happened."

"Be happy and content with where you are. The rest will come."

I've been told these things by well-meaning people before, and the theory behind these thoughts has always confused me. For, although they sound sweet and solid, underneath this logic is a huge monster of discontentment mascaraing as contentment.

What these kinds of thoughts are saying is that feeling content about singleness will solve my singleness. Pursuing this kind of remedy for a disappointed heart treats contentment as a magical cure for the "disease" of singleness. Contentment is more like an avenue to get what I want than a beautiful place of peace.

The truth is, contentment isn't the answer to singleness. Being content about being single won't solve my problems. It won't erase all of my desires. It certainly won't get me a relationship in the next couple of days.

The answer to singleness is not about how we feel about being single. In fact, I dare say that there is no "answer" at all.

Rather, we are called to bring all of our questions and desires and disappointments to the Lord and dwell in Christ.

When I'm content in Jesus, I'm happy to be with Jesus. I'm happy to serve Him, know Him, and follow Him. I'm content in Jesus while I'm single. I'll be content in Jesus if I'm not single. My contentment isn't in singleness but in Christ.

This past weekend, I led a DNOW, and one of the questions in our study was "what does it mean to be in Christ?" When preparing for the study, I had to pause and think for a spell about this one.

In Christ. I say this phrase a lot, but what does it mean? What does it reveal about God and about how I respond to Him?

I started looking up verses that say "in Christ." As it turns out, there are quite a few instances of "In Christ" in the Bible, 89 to be exact. Here are a few:

In Christ there is life. (Romans 6:11)

In Christ there is grace. (2 Timothy 1:9)

In Christ we are one. (Galatians 3:28)

In Christ we are blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3)

In Christ we put our hope. (Ephesians 1:12)

In Christ we are created for good works. (Ephesians 2:10)

In Christ God forgave us. (Ephesians 4:32)

In Christ there is peace. (Philippians 4:7)

In Christ there is fullness. (Colossians 2:10)

In Christ we will be persecuted. (2 Timothy 3:12)

In Christ there is glory. (1 Peter 5:10)

Oh, contentment is such a small response to these truths! In Christ we have new life, new hope, new identity, and so much more. In Christ there is glory, peace, grace, forgiveness, and purpose.

This is extravagant! This is joyous. This is worthy of all our adoration, much less our contentment.

In Christ we can be fully content while also being fully single, not because we no longer desire to find romantic love but because we are saturated with the divine love of Christ flowing through us and in us. Not because we don't face disappointments in life, but because we have put our hope in the One who never disappoints.

This is not to say that being single will be fun and easy when we are fully living in Christ. Nowhere does the Bible say that "in Christ all of your problems will go away." However, in Christ we can trust God with our desires and disappointments and move forward with purpose and strength from God. In Christ we are free not to serve singleness or feelings but rather be rooted in love for God and others.

I try not to write much about relationships and singleness because a lot has already been said on the subject and I am rather inexperienced in this playing field. Funnily enough, though, the one time I do sit down to write about singleness, it turns out to mostly be about Jesus.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

P.S. if you want to think more about how to serve God in whatever stage of relationship you find yourself in, check out Ben Stuart's sermon series about relationships, later turned into a book called "Single, Dating, Engaged, Married." I've listened to the first few sermons, and they have sparked so much passion in me for God's kingdom!

Grace In Everything- Two Years Later

Grace In Everything- Two Years Later

GRACE IN EVERYTHING TURNS TWO TODAY!!!!!!!

Part of me feels shocked that it's been that long, and the other part can't remember a time where I didn't learn something and instantly start forming a blog post in my heart.

First of all, THANK YOU.

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU.

Without you, reader, Grace In Everything couldn't have done what it's done. And what has Grace In Everything done, you ask? Let me tell you:

Two Years Later: Grace In Everything changed my life.

It changed how I viewed the lessons God teaches me. I started looking for them and seeking to interpret them into thoughts and words that others, and mainly I, could understand. God made me so much more aware of life through blogging.

It changed how I used my gifts. If you can't tell, I have the spiritual gift of teaching, and this little blog offered me chances to discover how to use this gift to help people, even as they helped me.

It changed how I spent my time. Because, SPOILER ALERT, blogging takes time. I've struggled with this a few times (I'm sure you noticed). Sometimes I didn't have the time to properly blog, but I've learned about time management and also how to write up a blog post in one night!

It changed my major. I went into college majoring in marketing because that was the useful, practical thing to do. I liked business, but it didn't feel like me. That's when I discovered mass communications. My experience with blogging and enjoyment of connecting with the "masses" prompted me to change my major to what I now LOVE.

Two Years Later: I wrote some fun posts.

In these two years, I published 108 posts, so picking a favorite is near impossible. (Like, trying to decide my top five almost hurt physically.) Buuut here a few that I'm pretty darn proud of:

I often go back to this post myself when I'm struggling to know what to do next.

This post documents my adventure dancing at AAB in New York two summers ago. Man, I learned so much then!

I poured out my deepest struggle here, and it was hard. It was hard to face the facts and tell others how I struggle. It was worth it, though, because Jesus shines through me, and in Him, my weakness is strength.

I love outfit posts, but my fashion testimony in this one made it a favorite!

Guys, this post freed me so much. It freed me to be me.

Not mentioned but still treasured are almost every other post I've published. Nbd.

Two Years Later: I met some cool people.

Whenever life steals me away from blogging, I feel something missing. And no, it's not the sound of fingers typing on a keyboard (school essays will never let me forget that noise). It's the friends that I've made through blogging. Y'all really make it worthwhile.

Grace, like, I blog for you. You are such a good friend that you deserve your own post of appreciation.

Erin, I think I've finally gotten over how weird it is that God teaches us the same things at the same time. God is just cool like that.

Emily, you make my heart smile.

Abbie, you never cease to inspire me.

Olivia, you are the coolest.

Madison, I didn't even know someone could do that with fashion until you showed me.

There are so many other people too. Really, every person that has commented, messaged, or contacted Grace In Everything is a blessing to me and the blog, so thank you.

Two Years Later: I did some cool things.

CHECK IT OUT!!

Paper Comets Magazine. I was a part of a AWESOME collaboration that put together an online magazine! Shout-out to Abigail and Ava for making this happen! A bunch of spectacular people designed pages focused on different inspiring words, so you should check it out.

Burning Youth. Speaking of awesome collaborations, I am a part of the Burning Youth community. Katie and Abbiee started a fabulous network of bloggers who have a thing or two to say about life. Yes, I haven't posted in a while, but that's about to change.  But seriously, if you want some inspiration, go check it out.

Instagram. I went out and started an Instagram account for Grace In Everything, and it's been fun! Give your girl a follow.

Facebook. Yes, Facebook still exists. Plus, it's been very useful in promoting Grace In Everything. Like the page!

Twitter. Sometimes I'm funny. Most of the time, I just quote my sisters.

Two Years Later: I'm looking forward to another two years

For the next two years, I have some fun things planned, like...

A YouTube Channel! I'm in the process of starting a YouTube Channel dedicated to my Disney Adventure! It's called Hannah's Disney Adventure- Grace in Disney World. (See what I did there?)

More posts about college life and tips on how to survive. Many of you are in college or about to start, so I'm going to post more about how thrive and enjoy college!

More posts about beauty and body image. This is one of my most passionate topics, so expect more Edition 139 posts.

A new look! I'm learning how to code websites, and I've already started on creating a face lift for Grace In Everything!

Comment below if you remember anything from this rediculously long post! (Since it's my blogiversary, I'll allow myself a bit of grace here.) What's one of your favorite posts from Grace In Everything? Are you as excited for these next two years?

AND THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING! GRACE IN EVERYTHING WOULDN'T BE HERE WITHOUT ALL OF Y'ALL!!!! So much love to each and every one of you <3 div="">

The Heart of New Years Resolutions

The Heart of New Years Resolutions

It's that time of year again, time for New Year's Resolutions. It's time for gyms to put their full force in advertising. It's time for notepads to fill up with goals and optimism to plant itself in full force in our minds. And this year, we're convinced that we can do it. We've got a plan. We've set our minds to our goals, and this is it- time to leap into a new year.

But we know, in the back of our minds, that these goals never turn out quite as planned.

Imagine you're sailing on a boat that has a leak in it, slowly letting the water fill up the vessel, constantly making the crew work to keep the boat afloat. What would be a better goal, to do a better job getting the water out or to fix the hole?

It seems obvious here to choose the later.

Now I ask you, do your New Year’s Resolutions represent option one or option two? Are you trying to get the water out of your life by grunting and trying harder, or are you fighting the heart of the problem, the leak?

One of the biggest resolutions today centers on health and fitness. We want to be fitter, skinnier, healthier, and happier. We want to have a six-pack or a certain number on the scale. And these are great things. I want them too.

I was thinking this past week about my health and fitness goals for 2017. This is something I’ve struggled with in the past and still struggle with today. It’s so tempting for me to make a goal and put my full force into meeting that goal, putting my identity into getting clear skin, going that mile, eating that salad. And when I meet that goal, I still don’t feel satisfied. I still feel insecure, discontent, and not enough.

That’s the trouble with many of our New Year’s Resolutions. Even when we meet them, we don’t feel satisfied. Why? Because we got better at getting the water out of the boat, but we didn’t address the leak in the boat.

Instead of dealing with our insecurities, we diet.

Instead of facing our fears, we build walls.

Instead of humbling ourselves for others, we find ways to make our friendships look better on the surface.

Instead of really letting Christ change us, grow us, weed out the sin in our lives, we resolve to read more books about Him.

But stop for a moment and envision with me a different way of going into the New Year. What if we made goals that reflected what our heart really needs? What if we worked on stopping the leak instead of simply getting the water out of the boat?

The girl who really wants to be able to post a transformation Tuesday picture by 2018 could have an even greater transformation: her soul could find greater beauty in Christ. She could find a security in Jesus’ love for her and His work in her, which is beautiful. She couldn’t have to bow down to the latest pressure of beauty in the 21st Century. She could stand taller than comparison and lift others up to see beauty more clearly instead of bringing them down into insecurity.

The girl who wants to manage time better and get such-and-such done by 2018 could have a greater peace in God than in any complete to-do list. She could embrace the freedom of grace and hold her plans in open hands. She could let God interrupt her plan for a greater mission. She could take hold of every opportunity and also rest in the sovereignty of the Father.

The girl who seeks to find community, friendship, or romance by 2018 could start viewing relationships as a way to truly love others and not simply be loved. She could shower the love of Christ upon others, whether they can give her what she wants or not. She could learn the wisdom and work of relationships and how God works in them.

Whether you relate to these situations or not, I challenge you to rethink your New Year’s resolutions. Make sure that you don’t forget the heart of the matter, the leak in the boat. Once that’s in order, the other, smaller things like working out, lessening social media, or having better friendships will make more sense. These things aren’t bad at all, but they won’t fix the problem until we fix the hole. After that, they will be changes that satisfy, resolutions that will do more than meet a goal. They will lead our hearts to look more like Jesus.

In all of these changes, these little steps towards holiness, we are not alone, though. In fact, we cannot do it alone, not matter how hard we try or how many resolutions we make.

But God can.

God is with us, every little step, every humbling falter. He wants us to grow in Him even more than we want to grow in Him, have you considered that? Let us ask Him for wisdom, for He loves to give it. Let us seek Him, for He will show us Himself.

“Being confident of this, that He who began the good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)

Have a Happy New Year, may 2017 be a year of overflowing joy and unexplainable peace!

It's Okay Not to Fit In

It's Okay Not to Fit In

Do you ever feel like a puzzle piece that never fits in the puzzle? It's like you're almost there, almost in the picture, surrounded by other pieces that all fit in with you. But your edges are different. They just don't quite fit.

This can be a dissatisfying place to stay. You stand there, on the outskirts of a group that you can't quite connect with. I feel like I've been there my whole life, a stray puzzle piece missing her puzzle. I mingle with a lot of different groups; one edge of my personality puzzle piece fits with the bloggers, another with the ballerinas, another with the church group, and so on. One of my biggest dreams is to fit- all of the way- with a group and let that group be my group, the place where I don't feel different, don't feel even a little bit on the outside.

Now I'm thinking that will never happen.

I've realized, however, that my mismatched personality is a gift, not a curse. To stand a bit aloof doesn't mean that I'm not important and doesn't mean I can't enjoy the company of others. My uniqueness doesn't need to hold me back; instead I should take joy in the fact that God's made me different, a puzzle piece completely unique.

In this state of uniqueness, I also have the opportunity to help the various groups that I almost fit in. I bring to them a splash of color that they didn't expect.

I'm a practical thinker in an artsy blog world.

I'm a balance seeker in the extreme of the ballet world.

I'm a passionate truth seeker, big-picture watcher, in a Church filled with opinions.

I'm different. Not better, not worse. Maybe one day I'll find the group that possesses all of the right edges for me, but until then, I will find joy in the outskirts, in the almosts. I will grow where God's planted me and help others to grow as well.

So here's to the stray puzzle pieces, the people who don't have a group, who don't quite fit in. Keep following Jesus, because He's making a home for you where you will fit so perfectly that you'll never leave!

"Jesus replied, 'Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head.'" (Matthew 8:20)

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms; if it were no so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." (John 14:1-2)

God's grace be with you,

Princess Hannah
